999
Peter Collins (+35=1478)
Only six trips north of the border, three of which were concentrated on climbing Donalds; 51 hill days in all, 11 camp sites, 7 hostels and one B&B. I also passed the 1000 trig columns mark. Highlights of my year included:
- Three new island hill visits, including the group trip to Carna at the Strontian meet. It still doesn't seem quite right to suddenly have 20 or more people swarming all over the place after solitude on your previous 100 hills.
- Superb calm weather doing three of the Cape Wrath hills, but I missed the last bus back to the ferry. I walked back to the road end and dialled 999 on my mobile to get a message to the Kyle of Durness boatman. 'We have never lost a passenger yet' is his boast, and he did not let me down.
- Sabhal Beag was another long day in hot sunshine from Gobernuisgach Lodge, on a delightful wide grassy path above a remote wild glen.
In the 'not so good' category:
- Some of the worst weather of the year getting to An Grianan (16A) and having to postpone Creag Riabhach for another time.
- Meall nan Eun (10B) was a lot of hard work, walking in from Loch Hourn.
- Burach (10C), where I went too far on a forest road and had to cut uphill through brash, swamp and bracken to make progress.
I can now also say that I've done 'The Bastard' following a minor excursion at the foot of the Mull of Kintyre (NR758123). This could be useful as a put down, when someone is going on about Helm Crag, Stac Pollaidh, etc.
