Shetland 2007

Tony Rogers

It seemed that most people in Lerwick know somebody who knows a man who has a boat to take people to the island of Noss. Some people only know a man who knows a man, etc. Stewart Logan and Brent Lynam spent many evenings in the bars of Lerwick trying to find one of these men. They even tried phoning an 80-year old man with a boat, who never answered his phone. They later found out that he had died. Clearly they did not have quite the right number. Some members of our party met the local MP on their flight back from Foula and explained the problem to him. On their return to Lerwick they were taken to the constituency office, where he proceeded to make numerous phone calls to people who might be able to help. Like most MPs he did not actually have a magic wand. During the week most people visited all the islands with Marilyn summits except Noss, and managed to visit the summits of 18 Marilyns. We had a very enjoyable week in what must have been amazing weather for the Shetlands, with seven days having at the most a few showers. The eighth day was the sort of diabolical day expected in Shetland. Many thanks to Brent for organising such a successful trip.
