Tips for the Tops

Tips for the Tops: Park Life

Woodhead Hill (27C, LR84)

Graham Bunn: I had to pay for the car park near Mabie House, but it does have the benefit of a cycle shop and cafe where you can pick up a leaflet for the cycle routes. Take the track west through Dalshinnie Glen and follow the red route, which heads to the west of Woodhead Hill (keeping an ear open for bikes). At about NX924714 take a path uphill to arrive at the end of an old wall. The map here has a firebreak heading for the summit, but this does not exist. After fighting our way through the trees, we came to an unofficial cycle route. If you can find the start of this you will have an easy route to the top, as the cycle route goes right by the top of the hill, which has a small cairn. If you continue along the cycle route it comes down onto a forest track east of the hill, which can be followed south to the main track and then back to the car park and cafe.

The Bochel (21A, LR36)

Andy Hyams: There is a way-marked walk around the base of the hill, with at least four access points from public roads. Once on the walk, the hill can be climbed anywhere. Glenlivet (Crown) estate has produced an excellent leaflet with a map of paths in the area between the Cromdale Hills and the Ladder Hills. It is readily available at local car parks and information centres. Who said the Royal Family is a waste of time? (AD: I did.).

Gyrn Moelfre (30E, LR125)

Tom Read: I noticed negative reports about this one in earlier editions. I always park in the yard at Moelfre Hall, then knock on the door and ask if it is OK to leave my car there for an hour and a half. Permission is always granted. There is no doubt in my mind that I tend to get relative leniency because I am always accompanied by either one or both of my young sons.

Hutton Roof Crags (34D, LR97)

Tom Read: Avoid the nuisance of previously described ascents by parking at the old quarry car park to the SW of the summit, and following the permitted tracks up from there. These paths do not appear on OS maps.
