Tips for the Tops: Avoiding Blood On The Tracks

Meall Luidh Mor (4B, LR42)

John Ward: This open-topped hill is surrounded by a thick sitka spruce plantation. The key to an ascent is to follow the track from Moy through the forest to a point where it descends to cross the stream leading down to a lochan (NN425806). From here it is possible to ascend a narrow ride, which soon broadens out. Above the plantation there is an agreeable feeling of escape, similar to climbing through an inversion. There is in fact a pleasant area of young scots pine trees between the plantation and the summit, which has two cairns, with the trig point to the south-west being the higher.

Bengray (27B, LR83)

Brent Lynam: From NX651585, the forest track will take you SW and then N to within a few hundred metres of the summit. I could have driven closer, but I parked at 636601 and did the long walk in. Apart from a few ruts and a hole near the start, this track was better than a lot of minor roads.

Black Hill (28A, LR 65/66)

Andy Hyams: There is a vehicle track from Logan Glen all the way to the top (not even shown on my 2004 edition of LR66).
